The Insight Seminar was, in part, originally developed to help oppressed peoples in South Africa overcome the sense of defeat that was a powerful force in their lives. Today, the seminars continue to combat the sense of defeat that comes with poverty, addiction, cultural oppression, and other circumstances that create a sense of despair in people. We understand that some circumstances are beyond human control. We believe, however, that everyone can make a difference, no matter what their place in life. Overcoming despair and planning for the future is a critical part of living well. We also believe that the more people there are who believe they can make a difference, the more of a difference each person can make.
We have found that many times, people have an idea of what they could do to improve their lives, but they don't believe they can really achieve their dreams. We are not pie-in-the-sky thinkers—a person living in abject poverty should probably not set a goal to buy a new mansion next year! We do believe in people taking control of every part of their life they can manage. A poor person may not be able to buy a mansion, but may be able to save money, work more efficiently, or change how or even where they live. Once they see that these goals are attainable, they can begin to take control of their environment, and improve their life.
This is not to say that we believe everyone should, or even can, be completely independant. Humans are social creatures—we need each other to accomplish our goals and achieve our dreams. Our seminars also examine how to work with other people to make our goals happen. Understanding both what each person can achieve alone and what all of us can achieve together helps us make better plans for the future.
Once people understand that they can make a difference, it becomes much easier to motivate them to make a difference. Our seminars encourage people to become real agents of change—individuals who can work alone or together to improve themselves, their jobs, their communities, and their world.
